Qantas Launches Carbon Offset Program

Qantas just launched its Carbon Offset Program allowing customers to minimize the impact of carbon emissions on the environment.  Passengers will now have the ability to offset emissions associated with their own travel on a voluntary basis to contribute to the greater good of the saving the planet.  Carbon offsetting is the process of allowing individuals and businesses to account for the amount of greenhouse gas they are responsible for emitting into the atmosphere by either preventing other greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere or removing an equivalent volume of greenhouse gas from the atmosphere.  Carbon offsetting projects include tree planting, energy efficiency measures and renewable energy projects.

How to go about offsetting carbon emissions related to your Qantas booking:

  1. After you make a flight booking, go to Qantas.com and click on the Offset button on the right-hand side of the page
  2. Whether a single booking or multiple (up to 12 at a time), a calculator will then add up your emissions and work out your offset total
  3. Your carbon offset contribution/payment will go towards approved abatement programs that have achieved Greenhouse Friendly accreditation

In addition, from September 19th onwards, Qantas will offset all emissions generated by Qantas staff for work-related travel and all ground transport operations as well as provide corporate accounts involved in the Qantas Deal Manager program with a report on their carbon “footprint” and the ability to offset their emissions.

Fly Carbon Neutral Day

To demonstrate their commitment to helping the environment and their new Carbon Offset Program, Qantas partnered with award winning CO2 Australia to fully fund a ‘Fly Carbon Neutral Day.’  On September 19th, Qantas calculated the emissions from every international and domestic flight that departed - approximately 40,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases from nearly 950 flights carrying over 100,000 passengers.  According to calculated data, CO2 will now plant approximately 90,000 native Mallee Eucalyptus trees around Australia to offset that day’s emissions.

Dragonair to Join Oneworld

Dragonair will join the Oneworld alliance as of November 1, 2007.  Although a part of Cathay Pacific Group, Dragonair has retained its own brand, identity and marketing.  Hong Kong-based Dragonair serves 19 destinations in Mainland China – over 400 flights per week.  Twelve of the nineteen cities will be new to the Oneworld network.  With the additions, Oneworld will serve a total of 22 destinations in Mainland China.

With the acquisition of Dragonair, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand and Cambodia will be connected to the growing Oneworld map.

As a Oneworld affiliate member, Dragonair will offer the alliance’s full range of services and benefits including frequent flyer mileage rewards.

EDGE INTELLIGENCE

Under 30 at greatest risk for blood clots

A recent Dutch study has revealed surprising new information that people under 30 are at the greatest risk of developing deep-vein thrombosis during long-haul flights than any other group.  Research leader Dr. Frits Rosendaal, whose study was published this month in PLOS Medicine, analysed 8755 employees of multinational firms who flew regularly for their work.  Dr. Frits was admittedly baffled by the higher incidence of blot clots in the younger respondents.   Studies revealed that the group at the greatest risk were tall, overweight passengers and women taking oral contraceptives.  Dr. Rosendaal recommended taking preventative measures such as blood-thinning aspirin or wearing compression stockings as well as doing mild movement exercises during the flight.
