Blast off! Virgin Galactic’s Plans for Commercial Space Travel

Space travel for consumers is quickly becoming a reality. Last month, Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Galactic unveiled its design for its commercial space ship, aptly named Spaceship Two, at a ceremony in New York’s natural history museum. The unveiling marked another milestone moment in the race to get passengers into space between 2010 and 2014. The project is costing an estimated $250 million in investment. In order to profit from his investment, passengers need to book. Currently 200 people globally have booked the trip into Earth’s outer atmosphere at $225,000 each. Spencer Travel is the only agency in Australia to receive a fully-paid space tourist booking thus far and there is only limited time left to be one of the first 1000 people into space. Before launching off, passengers will undergo a full health check and simulator training.

If you are interested in being the second passenger from Australia to book a flight into space, please contact your consultant at Executive Edge Travel.

Qantas A380 – The Green Machine

Qantas’s Airbus 380 is setting a new standard in the industry for fuel conservation and dubbed as the new ‘green machine.’ In the industry’s ongoing drive to reduce environmental effects, Qantas continues to lead the way with the A380 burning significantly less fuel than the industry average. The A380 burns 2.9 litres for every 100km which is lower than a small car (8 litres per 100km) and 2.6 litres/100km lower than the industry average. This lower fuel consumption means fewer overall emissions. In fact, the A380’s emission levels for nitrogen oxides - unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide - are 32,98 and 79 percent lower respectively than the stringent International Civil Aviation Organisation limits.

Other environmental innovations in the A380 production include the use of a chemical-free milling for fuselage panels, more eco-friendly painting, and steps to minimise energy and water consumption during the production cycle. Overall the A380 is considered the precursor for new technologies and working practices across the entire aerospace industry.

Emirates Leads Way in Improving Baggage Handling with New RFID Trial

Emirates Airlines has just announced its plans to trial the latest Radio-Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) with partners London Heathrow, Dubai International and Hong Kong International airports. Investing half a million on the project, Emirates aims to test the effectiveness and benefits of RFID against the existing barcode baggage tracking system. This trial is the largest-ever of its kind within the airline industry during which some 500,000 Emirates bags will be tagged with the new RFID chips over a 6 month period. The goal is for the RFID system to revolutionalise the way bags are tracked and monitored. Previous much smaller scale RFID trials have shown that the technology almost eliminates scanner misreads and significantly improves the efficiency of the baggage system and, as a result, better customer experience.

Qantas and Jetstar launch ‘Escape’ Multimedia Travel Program

This month Qantas, Qantas Holidays and Jetstar launch Escape – a unique multimedia travel program which entails a trilogy or TV, print and online. Escape offers an insider’s guide to holiday destinations around the world with in-depth travel features, content and tips aimed to help travellers plan their trips. The program even includes schedules, prices and special deals.
