Executive Edge Art of Travel

In 1945 the United Nations created UNESCO to ensure the preservation of our natural, cultural and intellectual heritage. Since then, almost 1,000 UNESCO World Heritage sites have been named around the world. We’ve chosen 8 spectacular UNESCO sites accompanied by nearby luxury properties/itineraries complete with travel blog stories from Edge Advisors who have experienced these areas themselves. Touch and feel history while marveling at UNESCO glory - spiritual awakenings at Amanjiwo to experience nearby Borobudur, the largest Buddhist sanctuary in the world in Central Java, lunar rainbows over Brazil’s Iguassu Falls next to Belmond das Cataratas, sunset dinners framed by the Taj Mahal at The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra or camp out in Jordan’s mystical Wadi Rum desert. Explore the historic city centre of Prague from the Mandarin Oriental in the shadow of Prague Castle, enjoy afternoon tea along Amsterdam’s Canal Ring at De L’Europe, walk the Great Wall of China, snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef from Lizard Island or hot air balloon over Cappadocia after sunrise breakfast on the terrace of the Museum Hotel.

Director Yvonne Verstandig’s Turkish Delight blog begins, "As we floated over Cappadocia in a hot air balloon, I had to pinch myself to ensure I wasn’t dreaming.” If you only get to ride in a hot air balloon once in your life, do it over UNESCO World Heritage Site Cappadocia, Turkey. The region is surreal - peppered with strange pointy stone spires that rise up toward the sky in pastel colors and lacy cutouts. From the perspective of floating in a wicker basket the landscape is otherworldly. Located in a special region of Cappadocia, Relais & Châteaux Museum Hotel has been meticulously restored from cave dwellings into 30 exquisitely unique rooms and suites. Steeped in thousands of years of history, there is a magical feel to the hotel. Lil’a restaurant, the terraces, bar, and Museum Hotel’s fabulous Roman pool all have amazing views over Cappadocia. Each morning at sunrise dozens of beautifully colored hot air balloons fly over the hotel for breakfast guests on the terrace to enjoy a breathtaking vision.

Great Wall of China DE L’EUROPE

Great Wall of China

Mao once said, “You cannot be a great man until you have walked the Great Wall.” Arguably the most recognizable UNESCO World Heritage Site and certainly a defining symbol of China’s strength, the Great Wall took a millennia to build and remains an iconic landmark of astounding feat. Originally conceived by Emperor Qin Shi Huang in the third century B.C. to prevent invasions, the best-preserved section of the Great Wall was built in the 14th through 17th centuries A.D. during the Ming Dynasty. Though the Great Wall never effectively prevented invaders from entering China, it served as a psychological barrier between Chinese civilization and the world. Edge’s Rita Anastasas describes the most accessible and least touristy area to explore the Wall at Mutianyu in her blog about China.

5 day Beijing & Great Wall itinerary - starting from USD 1,300 per person (based upon double occupancy) at  Waldorf Astoria (room upgrade*)

Amsterdam’s Canal Ring

De L’Europe, Amsterdam’s legendary hotel is an iconic 19th century treasure sitting directly on the Amstel River and along the famed UNESCO Canal Ring. Traditional old-world charm coexists with historic masterpieces in De L’Europe’s grand Promenade, where afternoon tea is served while river views provide a breathtaking backdrop. Beyond tulips and windmills, Amsterdam is intricately entwined with water. The Canal Ring (Grachtengordel), comprised of 165 fluid channels, was developed in Holland's 17th century Golden Age supporting its maritime trade and today is one of the world’s most recognizable urban landscapes hosting local festivals and celebrations. The most famous rings of the belt—the Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Singel canals—form the concentric loop that gives Amsterdam its half-moon shape.

Virtuoso amenities - guaranteed upgrade at time of booking (up to Junior Suites), daily full breakfast for 2, USD 100 food & beverage credit, early check-in/late check-out*, Junior Suites & above receive one-way airport transfer

Historic Centre Prague

The Mandarin Oriental, Prague is a carefully restored monastery dating back to the 14th century set in the shadows of Prague Castle and surrounded by cobbled streets of the UNESCO recognized historic city centre. Spared during World War II, Prague remains among the Old Continent’s best-preserved historic capitals showcasing an array of medieval spires, stately cupolas and ornate facades punctuated by its majestic Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural core. Beloved by Mozart, Prague continues to live for music and is the ideal place to hear melodies by its three iconic Czech composers - Smetana, Dvorák, or Janácek - in one of its three opera houses. Prague is so romantic that spontaneous marriage proposals are a frequent phenomenon! Mandarin Oriental, Prague is a destination in itself. Set like a gem amidst the palaces and gardens of Malá Strana and just steps away from Charles Bridge.

Amanjiwo, meaning “peaceful soul”, takes its inspiration from the surrounding culture of Central Java. Amanjiwo looks out onto Borobudur, the largest Buddhist sanctuary in the world and widely considered one of the Seven Wonders. Borobudur was rediscovered in 1815, buried under volcanic ash and now the temple sits majestically on a hilltop overlooking lush green farmland fields. Measuring 123 x 123 meters, the monument is a marvel of design, decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The architecture and stonework of this temple has no equal. Amanjiwo’s design also amazes. Suites feature terrazzo flooring, high ceilings, domed roofs and sliding glass doors that open onto garden terraces with views of Borobudur. Indonesian and Western cuisine is served in an open-air setting with panoramic views over the rice fields to Borobudur and its surrounding volcanoes. Discover this intriguing region on foot, private car, bicycle, horseback or andong, the horse-drawn carts used daily by villagers. Hotel tip? Take a private, sunrise tour of Borobudur.
